“Usual good service for our guest, but...”

Our Bishop comes in from England once or twice a year and we put him up at the Janesville Baymont. This has been going on for 7 or 8 years. He always tells us how great everything is and how friendly and helpful the staff is. So what is the problem? I make reservations several weeks to several months in advance. I return a few days before his visit and pay cash. This was the first time I was asked to pay a $25.00 deposit because of possible damage. I was not informed of the change when I made reservations. I was not informed of the change when I paid the bill. (At the time I made the reservations I asked for the bill in writing so I could take it back and get the money for the stay. I was not informed at that time there was an extra charge of any kind.) it was after I had received the receipt saying the room had been paid for that I was then told about the extra $25.00. I will say that I did STRONGLY question this! The front desk clerk went and got someone from the back (I think the bookkeeper). There was no manager or anyone who I could speak to that had any kind of authority. Then some large man (I think from maintenance) decided he should get in the middle of it. After ranting on about how we could break or steal something, (At this point I was paying the deposit so what he said was not needed and was just plain rude) I told him that I would not speak to him and I thought he should leave. He then told me I should leave. We have never had a complaint before - so maybe you just have a bad employee. A maintenance man should not come to the front desk and get in the middle of a guest problem. I understand the deposit thing, but feel I should have been informed of the change in policy. We are paying the bill and we are local and our Bishop has been coming for quite a while. Please teach your staff better customer service techniques and communication skills. Thank you.
