“Nice rooms but inexperienced staff”

We got three rooms on an opaque site, and were a bit surprised that we were given this hotel as a 2.5 star. But reviews seemed good. Unfortunately, the staff were not the best. Our rooms were spread out and we had to ask for a specific room number to be moved closer, but we were moved. Bed requests were completely ignored despite the low occupancy. One of our "non-smoking" rooms smelled of smoke. We arrived at breakfast just at opening to find that almost nothing was ready; the breakfast hostess was wonderful but "not allowed" to clock in until 6 am; therefore all the preparation was on the overnight front desk person. When we arrived, he was sitting on the sofa watching tv with his soda. After 6 am, when the hostess could clock in, things started getting prepared and put out. She tried several times to show him what to do or assign him a task. Each time, he would do that one little task and then go take his soda and drop back on the couch. Checking out also took forever, because he didn't know how to do anything. The woman in front of me was incredulous that he didn't know how to print receipts, and he yelled at her that it was his first day and he was doing a good job considering, it wasn't a big deal. She retorted that it WAS a big deal if you're on the other side of the counter! I just dropped my keys and he started snapping at me about not being able to print a receipt since I had a third party reservation. I never asked for a receipt, I was just trying to leave! Hopefully the management can re-train or replace this employee, because it would have been an OK experience without him, but we won't be back, opaquely or not!
