“Trying an Alternative to Holiday Inn Express...”

  , Garland
I had read several glowing reviews for the Baymont Inn & Suites and two things jumped out at me: 1) it was significantly lower in price (though not cheap) than the HIE and, 2) people reported having a better breakfast experience there. Plus, we did discover that the Baymont does accept pets for a $10.00 per night extra charge (a bonus, since we usually like to travel with our small dog). How it stacked up: The people at the Baymont were friendly and accommodating--always a welcome factor any place. We had to check out a day early due to an illness, and the charges remained the same per day and no fees were added due to our early departure. The room we were in was for handicapped people due to my rheumatoid arthritis and difficulty getting around. The bathroom was wonderfully spacious. The a/c did a good job keeping the room cool. (Although it was November, we were having unseasonably very warm weather. A well-functioning a/c was welcomed.)Room size: My husband noted on several occasions that this room was noticeably smaller the any room we'd had at HIE. And he missed the extra space. There wasn't much room to put our luggage.Breakfast: "Six of one..." My husband thought HIE was better. I thought that both were just so-so. When we first started staying at HIE, the breakfast was amazing! But, they started cutting corners. Eggs are powdered, bacon is paper-thin...that's at HIE. At Baymont, if the eggs are powdered, it's not as easily distinguishable, but my husband said he could tell they were. They had sausage most mornings, with ham one morning. My husband said that ham looked like it came from a deli, so he wasn't interested. I never sampled the gravy with the biscuits, but my husband said the gravy was super runny. I fought hard the compulsion to purchase two cans of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup and when no one looked, stir it in. But, I decided against that plan. That definitely would've thickened it..and would've added much-needed taste.I enjoyed the large bowl of fresh fruit. That was a welcome sight for me.Hot breakfast is a bold move. HIE had the right idea three yrs ago--until they cut corners. As someone with a business degree, I understand...corners have to be cut. But quality has to be maintained otherwise people will look for better options. Henderson has a diner opened for breakfast with lots of cars out front. We may try it next time. Hersheys?
