“A little disappointed in room 307”

  , Avondale
My wife and I were staying for 4 nights the week of Thanksgiving. When we got to the hotel, check-in was quick and efficient. The room was nice. The TV was horrible. The owner apparently decided to cut costs by only subscribing to basic (analog) cable, and trying to read the ticker on ESPN, for example, was nearly impossible because of the distortion. The refrigerator didn't work. I pulled it away from the wall and it was plugged in. It wasn't a big deal at first because we weren't using it the first two nights, but we were walking out through the lobby on Thanksgiving day and I mentioned it to the guy working the front desk. He said he'd take care of it. Well, he didn't. Sorry, but you don't tell someone you're going to do something and then not do it, particularly at your workplace.Admittedly, we were late getting up nearly every day, but I've never seen a hotel that ONLY services rooms in the morning...until now. Apparently if you're not out of your room by noon, you get to empty the trash yourself, get fresh towels yourself, and any other things you need. Most hotels I stay at have a "Do Not Disturb" door sign and also a "Service Room Now" door sign. This one had only a "Do Not Disturb" door sign, I'm guessing because a "Service Room Now" sign would incorrectly imply that someone would be available to do it.The water pressure was nearly non-existent. I'm glad I have my Air Force haircut because I can only imagine how long it would take someone to rinse their hair in that shower. I hope it was just something wrong with my room, but the water pressure was substandard at both the shower and the sink. The "free breakfast" was pretty bad, compared to other hotels we've stayed at. Biscuits that were tough, gravy that tasted burnt, scrambled eggs (they were okay), but not a hint of bacon, sausage, or ham in sight. Meatless breakfast. In Illinois. Seriously? Might as well stick to the stale muffins or bagels that they had on hand. The bed was comfortable, the room temperature was easily regulated, the bathroom was clean, and I was happy with all of that. There are times when that's ALL I want from a hotel (Vegas trips, for example). But when I'm going to be living in a room for 4 nights while I'm back "home" visiting family for the holidays, I expect more. I certainly expect people to do what they say they're going to do. Anything else is dishonesty, something I will not tolerate no matter how little I'm paying.
