“promised nonsmoking, room smelled like smoke”

  , Asheville
stayed 1 night, then stayed another night a week later. first stay was fine. clean and nice hotel. pretty good breakfast. even gave me a toothbrush an deodorant when I figured I had forgotten mine. came back a week later. checked in at 10pm or so, got last room on a busy night. had reservation for nonsmoking room in this completely nonsmoking hotel. but when we arrived, we got what we think was the last room, and we were told that our room had not been converted to nonsmoking yet and so smelled of smoke (Baymont had recently purchased this hotel from AmericInn, I think). (A staff member told us that he thought it wasn't just the old smoke smell; probably a recent guest in room had smelled a bit of smoke, thought it was a smoking room, then lit up.) they told us when we were checking in that if we wanted to find another hotel, they would not charge us for the night. but other hotels in area (including one across the parking lot) were full, so we were stuck with smoke-smelling room. we were disappointed that window and door were not open to air out the room before we arrived. we asked for window fan, and they said they had none. receptionist in evening was very polite an offered to check to see if we could be compensated for the problem; receptionist in morning was rather rude to us and unwilling to consider any compensation. they should have not rented out the smoke-smelling room until it was fully converted to nonsmoking. advice: do not check in late at night. You will probably be fine if you are one of the earlier parties checking in.
