“Tale of Two "Hotels"”

  , Stilwell
It was the best of rooms, it was the worst of rooms. We have stayed here twice this year. The first experience was great! The room was quiet, comfortable, and the recliner (required for health/sleep reasons) was wonderful. We come to Dubuque twice a year and had decided to always come to the Baymont. However, last week's stay was horrible. We reserved our room two weeks in advance. We asked for and were assigned the first floor room from our last visit. The manager called during our trip to the hotel and said room 309 (which was never mentioned to us) that was assigned to us did not exist, but he would provide a room with a recliner. When we got there we found the room was in the opposite wing, at the end of the hall right next to the pool. The smell of chlorine in the hall was terrible. My wife has breathing issues and it was difficult for her to be in the halls. Our room was at the end of the hall with a common wall that had the public restroom on the other side--not a quiet situation. The recliner was broken down and made a noise every time you moved a little while sitting in it. We were gone all day the next day. When we returned, the smell of chlorine was worse than the evening before. We thought we would have to leave but then rolled up a towel and put it under the door and turned on the bathroom fan which took a lot of the smell from the room. The room was so damp that the bedclothes and our clothes hanging in the closet felt clammy. Two days later my wife still has headaches and breathing problems from the chlorine, the dampness, and the alignment of the recliner. The contrast in our two stays was amazing. We will probably try one more time to stay there if we can get in the room that was originally promised. If not, we will find another hotel with a good recliner and a dry, not damp, room. It was such a disappointment since we were so pleased with the room the first time.
