“Debate about smoking area”

  , Mattoon
On checking into the hotel we were asked to sign a document confirming that the hotel was a non-smoking facility. Glad to oblige. After leaving the property and returning, we encountered the same clerk who checked us in as well as a couple of other staffers, smoking at the entry to the facility where we had to access the lobby. We had to walk through there smoke to enter the building. The next morning we went to the lobby for breakfast and saw a group of people standing outside the front entry to the building smoking. After observing them and then returning to their posts inside the building, it was clear they were all staff members. I asked one staffer why we had to sign a non-smoking agreement, only to encounter the staff smoking at the entry to the building on these two occasions. She agreed, saying she wasn't a smoker and "they" should smoke at another location and offered to let me speak to the assistant manager about this. The assistant manager came and spoke to us about the situation (who also happened to be one of the people smoking outside the entry that morning). She informed us that while the building is non-smoking the entry is a designated smoking area. I told her that I thought it was bad business to the lengths of having to sign a document only to face smoking while entering the building. She again re-iterated that the area was a designated smoking area. I told her that a spot somewhere other than the main entry might be a better spot. She then decided to argue with me the rights that smokers have. I asked her to accept my complaint and to end the conversation, as I would not debated the issue of smokers rights. She was rude and unprofessional. I will now always give my business to the Holiday Inn in Mattoon. GGod luck with this "assistant manager", she will be sure to ruin no only her lungs but your business.
