“unfortunate events”

The hotel looked very nice. Nice customer service when we checked in. Got to the second floor ...our first clue of a problem...a big fan had been set up in the hallway and was blowing full speed. Got to our room ...amenities were as promised but one problem...a foul odor in the room like strong cleaner or mold seemed to be emitting from the air/heat unit. Went down to the front desk to inform them & they had no clue why there was an odor other than the unit filters had been cleaned last week . Ask for another room and they moved us across the hall as we asked. The room seemed better but still a slight odor which was helped by opening the window & putting a towel on the air/heat unit and at the bottom of the door to block the odor from coming in under the door as it became stronger in the hallway. We were very tired and decided to stay because it was just for the night as we were passing through. The continental breakfast the next morning was adequate but nothing special. When chatting with the gal at the front desk...she informed us that someone had flooded one of the second floor rooms that went down to the first floor ...a week prior to our stay. Could it be a reason for the fan in the hallway? And the odor? Could have been a great stay had the situation been properly handled.
